Beer is a picturesque seaside village where we spent a day of our holidays. You will realise from my previous blog that the family enjoyed visiting nearby Sidmouth. The seaside town of Sidmouth has the Esplanade and the Peak. I spent a glorious sunrise photographing the seafront and landscape there and I went to Beer to make a comparison.

Beer is very different. The Main Street leads down to the cliff with a steep walk to the beach. The tide was out. Overlooking the pebbled beach, one can see the wooden walkways leading to the fishing boats. Along the cliff walls are the cafes and the colourful beach huts. People are moving around the beach, either paddling in the sea, nosing around the fishing gear scattered around the beached boats, or enjoying a cup of coffee in the sun.

All these sights and activities are of immediate interest to the photographer’s eye, and I could not wait to get down there with my camera.

The beach huts were very colourful and ideal for a few pictures. I loved the fishing boats on the beach. They were full of character, being weather worn from their many trips out to sea. The accompanying nets and traps were all laid out empty and ready for their next trip. The houses in the village offered a regimented and intimate feel. This, along with the properties along the Main Street, offered a welcome to the visitor. They must have offered a warm welcome to people returning from the sea.

This is just a small glimpse of Beer and you may want to compare this to my time in Sidmouth, another place I enjoyed visiting.
